However, the people who occupied these cars were still required to use their keys to open and close their doors. This was a huge obstacle for many and Renault engineers determined to do something about it.

The hands-free card first came out in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed as the ideal lifestyle car of the 21st century. Renault was unable to test all possible uses, despite the detailed design guidelines based upon over 6,000 interviews with customers.

Bernard Dumondel was the product leader for Laguna II at the time. He used the hotel room key to unlock his car. He believed that a car key could be made using the same magnetic strip used for the key.

In the years that followed the card was hailed as a revolutionary innovation and is now available in two out of three Renault vehicles. Although smartphones appear to be on the verge of replacing it, Renault has chosen to harness these new capabilities without letting the hands-free card fall to the side.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card from Renault was an innovation in technology at its launch 20 years ago. The exterior is the same however the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and more difficult to hack.

It's not possible to use it from outside to unlock doors or start the car until the driver activates it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are programmed to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key will work from a distance, allowing you to start the ignition of your car, but it won't be able to unlock the doors. This is for your safety.

The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system utilize a rolling-code. This decreases the chance of someone intercepting the control message and then transmitting it again to gain access, but it does not remove it. [1]
